ZAYNA KHAYAT - GRADUATE OF 1992
Zayna was part of the second ever entering class of Catholic Central. After graduating, she attended University of Windsor where she studied biochemistry.
Zayna won the President's Gold Medal for the top all around graduating student of the University class of 1996, as well as the Board of Governor's Silver Medal for graduating top of the Chemistry and Biochemistry program.
In 1996 Zayna moved to Toronto to begin doctoral studies at the University of Toronto / Hospital for Sick Children. She earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2001, with funding from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research for her research on diabetes. After earning her Ph.D.Zayna decided to leave academia and was recruited to the Toronto office of a prestigious international management consulting firm called the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) with a job that she explains as "a doctor for big businesses", offering strategic and management advice to large complex corporations and non-profit organizations around the world.
In 2004 Zayna married a fellow she met while playing ultimate frisbee, named Sheldon Bell. They now have three children - and reside in downtown Toronto. At the end of her current maternity leave, Zayna will join a smaller, Canadian consulting firm named SECOR, where she will be a partner in their Toronto health care practice.
From time to time, Zayna skims through her old year books and hundreds of fond memories flood in. Most are from her many hours running the student parliament, as well as playing basketball. Some of the fondest memories include
- how we made the most with what we had in that old building, especially the small gym where the 3-point line got cut off on both sides
- extremely dedicated staff
- playing euchre in the cafeteria ... and the 'jam' food fights that would spontaneously transpire
- those addictive warm chocolate chip cookies in the cafeteria
- CCH Radio
- Broadway-calibre plays (that I never made the cut for!)
- Angelic choirs singing at school masses
- Bright yellow basketball uniforms that were a bit too tight, with very short shorts
- Some really big hairdos, especially on some of the guys. What was everyone thinking?!
